"They do fun stuff with kids and they really like kids."Alexandra, CPNS Alum at 4½ years
"The teaching staff at CPNS is an invaluable resource for parents and students alike. The highly qualified and experienced teachers are genuinely tuned into children and the unique needs of each student. The Parent Education evenings taught by the teachers provides new and experienced parents many opportunities to learn child-rearing techniques that work!"Dr. Keely Sikes Rollings, Psy. D., MBA, CPNS Parent 2001 - 2007
Carlmont Parents Nursery School has a team of highly qualified, experienced and caring teachers. Our teachers are passionate about and dedicated to play-based developmental learning. They believe in partnering with parents to create the optimal environment for each child. They bring both a strong academic background and life experience from years of teaching as well as from bringing up their own children. They take on the role of guide to children and adults alike.
Teachers work together to create a safe, enriching environment which is designed to meet the developmental needs of all our students. Curriculum is developed based on the age, skills, experiences and needs of the students. During class, teachers seem to be everywhere at once, facilitating problem-solving and discovery in students young and old.
For the children, this means activities which stimulate social, emotional, cognitive and physical growth. The connections between play which children are naturally compelled to do, and the education that you want them to acquire are cleverly highlighted, guided and explained by the teachers at CPNS.
For the adults, this means having a resource to ask questions, share concerns and celebrate milestones. Formally, parenting seminars are tailored to the parents' interests and needs. Practically, teachers act as collaborator and counselor, working as a team with parents to foster growth through the preschool years.
As a member of Sequoia Adult School, Carlmont Parents Nursery School must have higher standards for academic achievement in our staff than state law mandates other preschools to have. Each of our teachers is required to hold a State of California Adult Education Teaching Credential with designated study in Human Development and Parent Education. Human Development or Early Childhood Development is a multi-disciplinary study which includes psychology, sociology, family studies, biology, physiology, and more.
When I was attending UCSD, my life was forever altered by inpiration attributed to Scoutmaster Forest Witcraft: "A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove. But the world may be different, because I was important in the life of a child."
While I had always been drawn to working with children, this cemented my career path as a preschool teacher. I have always firmly believed that Life is too short not to do something you love ... and I am completely fulfilled by a child looking into my eyes with both trust and affection ... and am honored to have a responsibility in fostering their curiosity and innate love for learning!
I have a BA in psychology with many units in early childhood education and more than 25 years of experience in the field. I was selected and served for a number of years as a Mentor Teacher to model quality practic for those in community college early childhood programs.
Additionally, I co-developed a program and facilitated classes that provided support for young children struggling with social challenges such as flexibility, prespective taking, and anxiety. It was so rewarding to see how we could coach an adjustment in behavior that created such success and literally changed that child's life!
I also have served for nearly two decades as the Coordinator of Youth Ministry, working with the teens at my church.
As a relative newcomer, I am delighted to be a part of the CPNS community that I have already found to be so warm and welcoming.
I am thrilled to join your school community and meet everyone! I have lots of fun projects to share and welcome new ideas and suggestions to make the preschool experience enriching for both the children and parents. My goals are to foster communication and cooperation and to develop a joy in the learning process.
With over 20 years as a preschool teacher, I have gained invaluable practical experience, a clear vision of child development and effective/creative methods with which to comfort children, build their self-esteem, inspire creativity and motivate learning. I strive to maintain positive, nurturing interactions with children. My strong background in early Childhood Education and years of experience lends itself to developmentally appropriate expectations for children's behavior. I validate children's feelings and encourage them to build self help skills and independently resolve conflicts with peers. I am supportive of children with special needs and their families and suggest helpful resources.
I am very excited to be the PreK Teacher this year and I have enjoyed teaching Summer School as well. CPNS has always held a special place in my heart since my son, now 30, had his first preschool experience here and now I find that I have come full circle.
Being a member of CPNS was what started my journey into Early Childhood Education. I attended Canada College and got my ECE certificate. I taught at a preschool in Portola Valley for 21 years; 4-5 year-olds were always my favorite age to teach. The last few years I have been a part of the CPNS staff as an aide and a long-term sub for Teacher Conny. I have a love of children's literature and am always looking for new books and authors. You will often find me reading to a child. I look forward to getting to know the children and parents as I start this new journey.
